The Importance of Nurturing the Postpartum Space

The postpartum period is a sacred time of healing and transformation. Yet, in today’s fast-paced world, many new mothers feel pressure to "bounce back" rather than honor the deep physical and emotional shifts happening after birth. As a labor and delivery nurse, birth coach, and energy medicine practitioner, I encourage mothers to create a nurturing postpartum space that allows them to rest, recover, and bond with their baby.

Your postpartum experience sets the foundation for your overall well-being as a mother, and prioritizing your healing space is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself and your baby.

What is a Postpartum Space and Why Does it Matter?

A postpartum space is more than just a room—it’s an environment that supports relaxation, emotional well-being, and physical healing. This space should allow you to:

  • Rest and recover without stress
  • Bond with your baby in a peaceful setting
  • Receive support from your partner, family, or postpartum doula
  • Feel emotionally safe and nurtured as you transition into motherhood

Many cultures around the world recognize the importance of postpartum care. In traditional cultures, new mothers are given 30-40 days of undisturbed rest to heal while family and friends take over household duties. Creating a supportive postpartum space brings back that wisdom and helps prevent exhaustion, emotional depletion, and postpartum complications. How to Create a Nurturing Postpartum Space

  1. Prepare Your Recovery Area
Whether it’s your bedroom, a cozy corner in your home, or a designated postpartum nest, this space should be:
    • Comfortable and quiet
    • Stocked with essentials like water, snacks, and baby supplies
    • Free from distractions and stressors
  2. Surround Yourself with Support
    • Ask for help with meals, laundry, and childcare so you can focus on healing.
    • Set clear boundaries with visitors to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
    • Work with a postpartum doula or birth coach for guidance and emotional support.

  1. Incorporate Emotional Healing Practices
Birth is a deeply emotional event, and many mothers experience a mix of joy, exhaustion, and vulnerability. Some even carry birth trauma that affects their postpartum experience.
    • Journaling and daily affirmations can help process emotions.
    • Emotion Code sessions can release trapped emotions from pregnancy and birth.
    • Gentle postpartum bodywork helps regulate the nervous system and promote relaxation.

  1. Create a Sensory Healing Environment
The right environment can promote deep relaxation and oxytocin release, which is essential for healing and breastfeeding. Consider adding:
    • Soft lighting or salt lamps for a calming glow
    • Calming music or white noise to reduce overstimulation
    • Essential oils like lavender or chamomile for relaxation

Hi, I'm Marya Eddaifi

I was only 22 when I had my son. It wasn't the best experience but I didn't know better.

It wasn’t until after I became a Labor and Delivery nurse did I realize how badly I was treated and grieved over my birth. Did I tell you this was 15 years later?

After realizing how nurses and medical providers impact such a huge life event, it became my mission to change the world through beautiful birth experiences!
